This seemed like a hopeless cause.
This is taken from inside the Polana Restaurant, minus the usual charming decor & chairs.
For a view from the outside, please see [link]

A team of workers would mop frantically trying to push the water out & keep the level down. Every 20 minutes or so another collection of big waves would hit.
Seconds after I took this picture, the water level had risen to knee height.

Many thanks for all the +favs and comments.

To :iconwodewose: for suggesting the DD and to :iconestudio: for featuring it.
I am deeply honoured.

To think that I had to phone a friend for a lift to get me to the location, because my car had broken down on route.
Talk about timing - it couldn't have been more perfect.

Daily Deviation

Suggester says: "For the capture of a moment; for the drama of the scene; and for the sheer human impact it's one of the finest news photos I've seen in a long time. Just check out the facial expression, the water bursting through the window - and the vain wielding of that broom or mop." The sea is pretty flat at the moment - not even that great for surfing ... but beautiful winter days :)

Lucky for me they hadn't had a thought to switch the lights off yet. I think the down-lights helped a lot with the mood of the shot.
In retrospect this was very dangerous, though I would think that if water got into the electrics it would have just shorted out.
Still, I shudder to think of the ramifications if it had.

Thanks

Yes, I can see how that is significant in the picture.
True, water and electricity aren't the best mixture for people.

You're welcome.

This one is stunning, works really well as a documentary shot, I like the almost 'soft' tones that contrast with what is happening here.

Nice work.

I hope that the damage wasn't as bad as I imagine.

Bloody hell. Have you tried selling this pic - or any others in the series - to your local press? No, make that your national press. If you haven't, you should. Come to that, you could try the British press too - I've seldom seen anything more dramatically effective than that vain mop/broom.

Wow ! Aidan, what a wonderful compliment. To think that I had 2nd thoughts about posting this pic, but I did like the human element in the story.
The press - I did think about it, but there were loads of people taking pics. I'm sure the press is turning people away by now.
Still, I'm not too sure how to go about it - I guess just calling is the answer ?
What about the British press - do you have any suggestions ?
Now that would be something

Other than that I was thinking about a series of prints to sell locally

Actually, despite working in the press I'm not entirely sure how to go about it either. But rather than calling, I'd definitely send a (low-res) pic by email to the picture editor, and maybe also the news editor, of any paper or mag you think might be relevant. As for there being lots of people taking pics, I doubt very much whether any of them got anything better than this one of yours.
I'll send you a note separately with the email addresses of a couple of possible British papers.
I also intend to put this forward as a possible Daily Deviation on here, though I have to say my success rate with that is next to zero.
