There is something unusual about this shot, besides the obvious.
Take a closer look at the water bucket. The Oryx helicopter is filling the bucket to help fight a nearby peninsula fire (I have never seen buckets being filled at sea. I gather the salt deposit from sea water would be detrimental to the minerals in the soil)
Now look at the small 'dark' dot in the water to the left of the bucket. This is in fact some-ones head breaching the surface, as he is swimming to the other side of the dam. I saw this person momentarily as he came out the water on my side, for a short break. I gathered he was training for something, or just a fitness fanatic, because he had swum across a couple of times already.
At the time I was with my family, just relaxing near the waters edge. Non of us anticipated the Oryx to abruptly disturb the peace. Luckily I had my camera and I might add it was a bit of a fumble as I was completely unprepared. Fortunately, the swimmer was not hurt.
Oryx helicopters perform an important function in fighting peninsula fires, particularly in the high lying mountainous areas which are inaccessible by other means.

That's an astonishing pic, Donald - even before you read the equally astonishing story behind it. I wonder if the chopper pilot had any idea the swimmer was there?
Thanks Aidan ...no I don't think he did. It is not unusual to see people swimming in the dam, though before this time I had actually never seen anyone swimming right across. So it would not normally be the case that someone is in the middle of the dam. I think the pilot was totally unaware that he was there. (the water is also quite cold & also dark- at least for my liking)
The swimmer actually joked about it when he climed out.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
I'm a lover of visual impacts. I like brilliant colors and shapes. And I decided to collect a whole stack of deviations that reflect that taste. These pieces showcased below deserve every bit of publicity you can give them. x)P
